WEB DESK: The Israeli military has confirmed the assassination of a senior Hezbollah leader following a precision air strike on the Lebanese capital.
According to Israel’s Army Radio, the commander of the elite Radwan Force, who was the primary target of the operation, was successfully eliminated during the raid on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The strike, which targeted a high-density residential area known as a Hezbollah stronghold, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing border conflict.
Witnesses reported a massive explosion that levelled a multi-storey building, with Lebanese emergency services rushing to the scene to search for survivors amidst the rubble.
Escalation on the northern front
The assassination follows weeks of intensifying cross-border fire between the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah militants.
Israeli officials have long identified the Radwan Force as the group’s most formidable offensive unit, trained specifically for cross-border incursions.
While Hezbollah has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the commander’s death, the IDF maintains that the operation was a “targeted strike” aimed at degrading the group’s command structure and preventing imminent threats to Israeli civilians.
Local authorities in Beirut have reported several civilian casualties as a result of the blast, further heightening fears of an all-out regional war.
