RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi’s renowned public sector healthcare institution, the Holy Family Hospital (HFH), has temporarily ceased admitting patients as it embarks on a comprehensive renovation project.
This closure is part of a Rs2 billion endeavor to enhance one of the oldest hospitals in the province.
The hospital will remain closed for four months to facilitate essential maintenance and refurbishment. During this period, all departments within the hospital will undergo upgrading and renovation, prompting the relocation of patients to alternative healthcare facilities.
To accommodate patients’ needs during this renovation, individuals requiring medical attention have been transferred to four other hospitals within the city. These hospitals include Benazir Bhutto General Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital, Rawalpindi Institute of Urology and Kidney Transplantation, and Red Crescent Hospital.
The hospital’s invaluable medical equipment, valued at millions of rupees, has been carefully transported to the hospital’s older building. Additionally, the furniture from the 1,100-bed facility has been temporarily placed outdoors.

With the influx of patients in these alternative public hospitals, the healthcare system in these facilities has become notably overburdened, according to sources.
Till completion of the necessary renovations in the older building, the emergency department, operation theaters, wards, OPD department, laboratory, and blood bank have all been temporarily closed. This part of the facility has been handed over to the C&W department in preparation for the three-month upgrade and renovation project for the hospital’s spacious new building.
While the hospital’s treatment system remains on hiatus, the administration block in the older building remains operational. The valuable machinery, valued at millions of rupees, has been relocated to other areas within the older block.
The Holy Family Hospital, boasting a capacity of 1,100 beds, stands as the largest public healthcare facility in the garrison city, historically serving a substantial patient population.
The temporary closure is having a great impact on the patients coming from all over the country.
