The Sindh government has officially opened registration for a Rs 2,000 petrol subsidy aimed at providing relief to motorcyclists amid rising fuel prices. The initiative is part of a broader emergency package introduced in response to increasing global energy costs linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that eligible citizens can now apply through the Excise Department’s online portal. The subsidy, covering the cost of 20 litres of fuel, will be disbursed directly into applicants’ bank accounts after successful verification.
How to Apply for the Petrol Subsidy
Motorcyclists can complete the registration process by following these steps:
- Visit the official Excise Department portal: taxportal.excise.gos.pk
- Sign up or log in to the portal/app
- Ensure the motorcycle is registered in your name
- Provide a bank account that is also registered under your name
- Complete the verification process
Once approved, the subsidy amount will be transferred automatically. Applicants can also track their registration status through the same portal. For assistance, the Excise Department has provided a helpline: 021-111-374-634.
Key Conditions and Facilitation Measures
The government has introduced several measures to simplify the process:
- Motorcycle ownership must be in the applicant’s name
- Ownership transfer fees have been waived to encourage compliance
- Excise offices will operate extended hours, including weekends
- Only one subsidy will be provided per individual, even if multiple motorcycles are registered
Citizens without bank accounts have been urged to open one to receive the payment without delays.
Relief Package Amid Rising Fuel Costs
The subsidy comes as Pakistan faces mounting pressure from escalating global fuel prices. The Sindh government has opted for targeted financial assistance rather than broad-based subsidies, ensuring support reaches those who need it most.
In addition to motorcyclists, the relief package includes:
- Farmers: Rs 1,500 per acre (up to 25 acres) for one month, starting April 8
- Transporters: Monthly support ranging from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.2 million depending on vehicle type
- Public Transport: Fares to remain unchanged despite fuel price increases
The government has also reduced fuel allocations for official vehicles by 50 per cent for two months as part of austerity measures.
Government’s Position
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah reiterated that direct financial transfers are more effective than indirect subsidies. He also warned transporters against overcharging passengers, stating that strict action will be taken against violations.
With approximately 6.7 million registered motorcycles in Sindh, authorities expect significant participation in the scheme. The government has assured that all eligible applicants will receive the Rs 2,000 subsidy within April following successful registration and verification.
This initiative reflects Sindh’s effort to cushion citizens from the economic impact of rising fuel costs while maintaining transparency and efficiency through digital systems.
