WEB DESK: Actress Hunter Schafer disclosed her decision to veer away from exclusively accepting transgender roles, marking a deliberate shift in her career trajectory on Wednesday.
Schafer is renowned for her portrayal of Jules Vaughn in HBO’s “Euphoria”. She gained widespread recognition as a transgender actress in the teen drama.
However, she now wants to move being solely typecast or defined by her gender identity.

In an interview with GQ magazine, Schafer expressed her desire to distance herself from the label of a “trans actress,” perceiving it as “constraining” and detrimental to her artistic goals.
She expressed her determination to be recognised for her talents rather than solely her gender identity.
Schafer stated her efforts to steer public discourse away from her transgender identity were “intentional”. She is determined to abstain from using the term “trans” in interviews and actively declining roles predominantly focused on trans characters.
Despite her prominence as a transgender figure in the media, she reiterated that her career achievements would have a greater impact as an advocacy tool than constantly highlighting her identity.
While acknowledging the privilege of exerting agency in her roles and shifting the narrative away from solely her trans identity, Schafer remains firm in her decision.
Hunter Schafer debuted as an actress in 2017. Her breakthrough came with the portrayal of Jules Vaughn in the aforementioned Euphoria, a portrayal that earned various accolades including an MTV Movie and TV Award nomination.

The actress has gone on to star in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and upcoming projects “Cuckoo” and “Kinds of Kindness”.
The discussion on casting representation, particularly concerning transgender characters, is evolving in Hollywood. While some advocate for “authentic” representation by casting transgender actors in corresponding roles, others point out that the concept of acting is portraying characters regardless of shared characteristics.
