‘I don’t know any Princess Gloria’, Bilawal says, dismissing marriage rumours

KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday denied social media reports claiming that he had been engaged or was set to marry a European royal, saying no such development had taken place and that he did not know anyone named “Princess Gloria”.
In a video message, Bilawal said social media had gone a step further by arranging his engagement and marriage despite nothing of the sort happening.
“Nothing like this has happened, nor do I know any Princess Gloria,” Bilawal said.
He added that if there was any decision regarding his marriage in the future, his family would make the announcement.
Bilawal also criticised what he described as social media “drama”, saying such speculation was being used to divert public attention from real issues.
He referred to the deaths of 14 newborns at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and criticised a federal minister over remarks concerning the creation of new provinces.
Bilawal said the minister wanted to become Pakistan’s “Gorbachev” and divide the country into 30 parts, adding that someone who could not run a hospital was asking businessmen in Lahore to create and run provinces.
He said the Sindh Assembly had already taken a “bold” position on the issue, adding that such proposals could not be made on the streets or at a Lahore business forum.
How the rumours spread
The latest clarification follows several days of speculation on social media and in local media about Bilawal’s alleged engagement.
Some posts claimed that the PPP chairman was set to marry a woman linked to the former Austrian royal family, with others identifying the alleged prospective bride as “Gloria von Habsburg”.
Other versions of the claim linked the alleged engagement to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, and suggested that wedding preparations were under way.
The claims gained further traction after President Asif Ali Zardari travelled abroad on a private visit. The Presidency said on Aug. 27 that Zardari had “proceeded abroad on a private visit” but did not disclose his destination or the purpose of the trip.
Social media users subsequently linked the visit to the alleged wedding plans, although neither the Presidency nor the PPP indicated that the trip was connected to Bilawal’s personal life.
Karachi Mayor and PPP leader Murtaza Wahab, who is also Bilawal’s spokesperson, had already rejected the reports on Saturday, describing them as “incorrect and unfounded”.
There has been no official announcement from Bilawal or his family confirming an engagement, prospective spouse or wedding date. The reports linking him to a European royal have also not been independently verified.
Bilawal’s earlier comments on marriage
The latest rumours have revived interest in Bilawal’s previous public comments about marriage.
During the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2022, when asked about his marriage plans, the then foreign minister said he did have plans to marry but did not disclose a date or details about a prospective spouse.
In a 2016 interview, Bilawal had also joked that any prospective bride would first have to win over his sisters, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari and Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari.
Bilawal, born on Sept. 21, 1988, is the son of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari. He has served as foreign minister and currently heads the PPP.
His latest remarks appear to put to rest the current round of engagement and marriage speculation, which had spread widely online without official confirmation.
