IAEA approves safeguards agreement for Chashma-5 nuclear plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has given unanimous approval to the Safeguards Agreement with Pakistan for the application of safeguards at Unit 5 (C-5) of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, signaling international confidence in Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

C-5 will have a generation capacity of 1,200 MW and will operate as a Pressurized Water Reactor, expected to come online by 2030. Once operational, it will provide the national grid with a major source of low-carbon electricity, strengthening the country’s energy security, supporting climate goals, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Pakistan currently operates six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW, maintaining an average capacity factor of over 90 per cent. Nuclear energy contributes 18.3 per cent of the national electricity mix and 34 per cent of total low-carbon generation, backed by more than 100 reactor-years of safe, secure, and fully safeguarded operations.

The approval of the safeguards agreement for Chashma-5 marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s clean energy journey and underscores the country’s adherence to international nuclear safety and non-proliferation standards.
