ISLAMABAD/VIENNA: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has praised the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for its effective and peaceful use of nuclear technology, particularly in the field of cancer treatment.
In a message issued from Vienna, Austria, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commended PAEC’s role in combating cancer, calling its efforts significant and impactful. He noted that more than 100,000 people die from cancer every year in Pakistan, describing the disease as a serious public health challenge.
To address this growing concern, Grossi said, PAEC has established 21 cancer hospitals across the country, providing much-needed diagnostic and treatment facilities. He added that the development of a highly professional team of cancer specialists under PAEC is an achievement worthy of appreciation.
The IAEA chief also congratulated PAEC on the establishment of Kenor (Kashmir Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy) in Azad Kashmir, which was inaugurated last week by the Prime Minister. The facility is Kashmir’s first cancer hospital and PAEC’s 21st nationwide.
Grossi further highlighted the importance of Noori Hospital Islamabad’s partnership as an IAEA “Ray of Hope” Anchor Center, describing it as a major step in expanding access to cancer care and advanced medical technologies.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, the IAEA Director General said the organisation would continue to extend full support to Pakistan for the peaceful application of nuclear technology, particularly in healthcare and other developmental sectors.
