US President Donald Trump said he would only agree to a deal that is beneficial to the United States, while describing negotiations as his core responsibility and insisting that his administration holds leverage in talks with Iran, according to an interview with Fox News.
Trump said that engaging in negotiations was “my job and I do it,” adding that Iranian negotiators were “very skilled” in diplomatic discussions. He stressed that both sides continued to engage in talks despite deep differences.
The US president claimed that Washington had strong bargaining power in the process, saying the United States “has all the cards” following what he described as a military defeat of Iran. He further asserted that Iran’s naval and air capabilities had been “completely destroyed,” though he suggested that parts of its ground forces were left intact, which he described as comparatively moderate.
Trump argued that prolonged and destructive wars should be avoided, warning that if a country is fully devastated in conflict, it can take decades to rebuild. “If everything is destroyed, a nation cannot rebuild for 40 years,” he said, cautioning against unnecessary escalation.
He reiterated that any final agreement would depend on US interests and would not proceed unless it delivered clear advantages for Washington. The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic tensions and intermittent negotiations involving Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security concerns.
