Imran Khan in stable health, lawyer Salman Safdar says after jail meeting

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court-appointed amicus curiae Barrister Salman Safdar met Pakistan Thereek-e-Insaf founder and former prime minister Imran Khan at Adiala jail on Tuesday to assess his prison conditions.

After the meeting, Safdar spoke briefly to reporters outside the jail, saying he had been granted full access in accordance with the court’s directives.

“I have been inside for three hours. Full access was provided as per the court’s order, and it is not appropriate to comment until the report is submitted to the Supreme Court,” he said. Safdar said that Khan’s health appeared to be stable.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had appointed Safdar as friend of the court and instructed him to visit Khan in prison and submit a written report on his conditions.

The two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, had reviewed a petition filed by Khan’s lawyers seeking a meeting with him.

In its written order, the court directed that Safdar be allowed access to the former prime minister’s cell to inspect facilities and submit a report by February 11.

The next hearing in the case has been adjourned until February 12, pending submission of the report.
