ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was briefly transferred from prison to a hospital in Islamabad overnight to receive an injection before being moved back to Adiala jail, the party said on Monday.
According to a spokesperson for Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Khan was brought late on Sunday night for treatment related to an eye condition. The spokesperson said Khan received his fifth eye injection as part of his ongoing treatment. Doctors also conducted a medical examination to assess his condition during the visit.
According to the hospital, Khan’s eye health has shown significant improvement, and his condition is now much better than before.
No further details regarding the treatment or future medical appointments were immediately provided.
Khan, 74, has been incarcerated at the Adiala jail since late 2023, facing a slew of legal challenges that his party says are politically motivated to keep him out of politics.
“I have just been informed that Khan sab was taken last night to PIMS (Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences) once again for an injection and then shifted back to Adiala,” PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said on social media platform X.
“We strongly reiterate our demand of shifting him to hospital for treatment. We demand meeting with family immediately,” Gohar added.
Government and jail authorities did not respond to requests for comment on Khan’s current medical state or the specific nature of the injection administered.
The brief transfer is the latest in a series of late-night hospital visits for former prime minister, whose health has become a core rallying point for his party.
PTI leaders and Khan’s family have frequently alleged that the former premier is being kept in solitary confinement and denied access to his personal physicians.
Khan was ousted from power in 2022 via a parliamentary vote of no confidence.
Despite his imprisonment, he remains arguably Pakistan’s most popular political figure, with his party winning the most seats as independent candidates in the last general election.
Since his arrest in August 2023, Khan’s health has been a volatile topic of debate between the government and the PTI.
In early 2026, medical examinations revealed that Khan was suffering from a serious vision issue in his right eye.
Independent and state doctors diagnosed him with “Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO)”, a dangerous condition involving a blockage in the retinal vein that can cause permanent vision loss if untreated.
In late January 2026, Khan was secretly moved under heavy security to PIMS for a specialised 20-minute ophthalmic procedure to treat the blockage.
Khan’s longtime personal physicians, including Dr Aasim Yusuf and Dr Faisal Sultan, have publicly campaigned for him to be moved to a tertiary facility like Shifa International Hospital for a “full multidisciplinary evaluation.”
The opposition has consistently rejected state-run medical examinations conducted without Khan’s family or personal doctors present, labeling them “malicious and secretive.”
Beyond his jail-era ailments, Khan is still recovering from long-term complications related to a November 2022 assassination attempt, where he was shot in the leg during a political rally in Wazirabad.
Cases Against Imran Khan
Khan faces over 150 legal cases ranging from alleged corruption to treason. While his legal team has successfully secured bail or overturned convictions in several prominent cases, he remains behind bars due to overlapping charges.
Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were accused of illegally retaining and selling state gifts received during his premiership at values far below their market worth. They received multiple sentences in these cases, though some convictions have been suspended on appeal.
Khan was also accused of leaking a classified diplomatic cable (cipher) sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States.
The state argued Khan used the document for political leverage to claim a foreign conspiracy ousted him. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but the Islamabad High Court later acquitted him of the treason charges.
In the Al-Qadir Trust case, he and his wife are accused of accepting multi-billion-rupee land bribes from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundering 190 million pounds sterling back to the tycoon — money that had been seized by the UK’s National Crime Agency and returned to Pakistan.
Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven months in prison after a court ruled their 2018 marriage violated Islamic laws regarding the mandatory waiting period (iddat) following a woman’s divorce.
This case was widely condemned by civil society and human rights organisations as a weaponisation of family law.
Following Khan’s initial brief arrest in May 2023, widespread protests turned violent, resulting in attacks on military installations.
Khan is facing multiple counts of incitement and abetment of violence related to these riots, which the state has used as grounds to repeatedly extend his judicial remand.
