In-laws allegedly torture woman with hot iron rods over mobile phone

JHELUM: A woman in Jhelum was allegedly stripped and beaten with hot iron rods and sticks by her in-laws for having a mobile phone, authorities said on Friday.

The victim told police that her in-laws, including her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, beat her severely, while her husband reportedly pulled her ears with pliers, leaving her unconscious.

Punjab Women Protection Authority chairperson Hina Parvez Butt took notice of the incident following instructions from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Butt has sought a detailed report from the District Police Officer in Jhelum.

Police said that all suspects had been arrested and were under investigation.

Hina Parvez Butt condemned the attack, saying violence against women would not be tolerated.

She said that the victim would receive full legal, medical, and psychological support, and warned that the perpetrators would face strict punishment.

“These acts cannot be allowed under any circumstances,” she said.

“Society must play its part in ending violence against women. There will be zero compromise on women’s protection, and those who commit such crimes will not be spared. Safe Punjab for women is our commitment under the vision of the chief minister.”
