India captain Shubman Gill was forced to retire hurt during the morning session of the second day of the Test in Kolkata after sustaining what appeared to be a neck injury.
Gill came out to bat immediately after the drinks break following the dismissal of Washington Sundar by South Africa spinner Simon Harmer. On facing his second ball, Gill attempted a slog sweep and managed to hit a boundary. However, he showed signs of discomfort immediately after the shot, clutching the back of his neck and struggling to move his head.
The team physio rushed to the field to attend to Gill, who soon decided to leave the crease. He was replaced by wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.
The injury comes at a crucial stage of the match, and India will be hoping their captain recovers quickly to continue leading the side.
