MUMBAI: India is reportedly considering excluding Virat Kohli from the team’s lineup for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, slated for June in the West Indies and the United States (US).
Kohli has not participated in any T20I matches for more than a year following his team’s elimination from the 2022 T20 World Cup when it suffered a ten-wicket defeat against England in the semi-finals.
Despite Kohli’s return to the sport’s shortest format earlier this year for a series against Afghanistan, his inclusion for the 2024 World Cup remained uncertain. While Rohit Sharma’s presence in the squad was confirmed, Kohli’s participation is still doubtful, notwithstanding his past strong showings in T20 tournaments.

As per sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is worried that the slow wickets in the West Indies might not complement Kohli’s playing style. Additionally, the selection committee is questioning Kohli’s suitability for the shorter format.
The decision regarding Kohli’s inclusion will depend largely on his performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year.
The selection committee is also considering younger players like Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh for the squad.
The final squad for the T20 World Cup is expected to be submitted to the International Cricket Council (ICC) by the first week of May, following evaluation of the players’ performances in the IPL.
