JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in Jerusalem on Wednesday that India stands “firmly” alongside Israel in the aftermath of Hamas’s October 7, 2023 assault, expressing solidarity during an address to Israel’s parliament.

Speaking at the Knesset, Modi conveyed condolences on behalf of the Indian people for those killed in the attack, AFP reported. He said India shares Israel’s grief and would continue to support the country “with full conviction” in the present moment and in the future.

During his two-day trip, Modi also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade and defense. The visit, aimed at strengthening strategic ties, has sparked criticism among some political voices back home in India.

While Modi did not directly reference the large number of Palestinian casualties in Gaza over the course of the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas, he noted that India backs initiatives that promote lasting peace and stability across the region.

Highlighting economic and technological collaboration, Modi said India’s rapid growth combined with Israel’s strengths in innovation provide a strong basis for future partnership. He pointed to potential cooperation in emerging fields such as quantum technology, semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence.

Earlier in the day, Netanyahu personally welcomed Modi at Ben Gurion Airport, where the two leaders shared a warm greeting on the tarmac. Officials from Netanyahu’s office described the relationship between the leaders as close and personal, reiterating what they called a strong alliance rooted in shared strategic interests and innovation.

According to the Israeli prime minister’s office, the two leaders later held private talks following the official reception. Netanyahu characterised the relationship as a genuine friendship, while Modi said their meeting had been “excellent” in a post on social media.
