ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned India’s recent approval of the Dilhasti Stage II Hydropower Project on the Chenab River, calling it a serious breach of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Vice President Sherry Rehman slammed the move, describing it as a direct attack on Pakistan’s water rights. “The unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is a clear violation of international law and global norms,” she said.
Rehman warned that the hydropower project could pose significant threats to Pakistan’s water security, agriculture, environment, and even national defense. She accused India of using water as a strategic tool, fueling tension and instability in South Asia.
Highlighting the recent sharp decrease in the Chenab River’s water flow, Rehman called it “clear proof of Indian water aggression.” She emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty is an internationally guaranteed agreement and cannot be ignored or treated at the discretion of a single country.
Rehman also issued a stern warning against any attempt to monopolise Pakistan’s rivers, calling water a “red line” for the country. She declared that Pakistan will not compromise on its rights and will respond strongly to any violations.
“If India does not change course, it will face strong resistance and consequences,” she said, adding that Pakistan would raise the issue at international forums and demand India abide by its obligations under the treaty.
