Industries receive Rs12.1bn in power relief under concessional package


WEB DESK: Pakistan’s industrial sector received Rs12.125 billion in electricity cost relief during December 2025 and January 2026 under the government’s three-year long-term concessional power package, according to data released by the Power Division on Friday.

According to the Express Tribune, the official figures show that 127,686 industrial consumers benefited from the scheme over the two-month period accounting for 46 percent of the country’s 278,961 registered industrial consumers.

Uniform relief of Rs10.3 per unit

Under the package, both small and large industries were offered a uniform subsidy of Rs10.3 per unit on surplus electricity consumption. During December and January combined, industries consumed 1,176 million units of electricity under the surplus arrangement, representing 23.8% of total industrial electricity sales for the period.

December: Rs5.74bn relief

In December alone, 557 million units were sold under the scheme 23% of total industrial electricity consumption for the month.

This translated into financial relief of Rs5.743 billion. A total of 125,829 industrial consumers approximately 45% of registered users availed the concessional package during December.

January: relief rises to Rs6.38bn

In January 2026, industrial consumption under the surplus package increased to 619 million units, accounting for 24.5% of total industrial electricity sales for the month.

The financial relief provided in January amounted to Rs6.382 billion. The number of benefiting industrial consumers also rose to 127,686, reflecting broader uptake of the concessional electricity scheme.

Supporting industrial activity

The three-year concessional power package aims to enhance industrial productivity by offering discounted rates on surplus electricity, helping businesses manage energy costs amid broader economic pressures.

The latest data indicates steady participation by nearly half of the country’s industrial consumers, with surplus electricity accounting for nearly a quarter of total industrial power usage over the two-month period.
