Inter vs Atalanta: Injury-hit Inter seek rebound as Serie A title race tightens

MILAN: Inter Milan will look to bounce back when they host Atalanta on Saturday, with the Inter vs Atalanta clash arriving at a crucial stage of the Serie A title race.

Despite a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan in last weekend’s Derby della Madonnina, Inter remain seven points clear at the top of the table. However, the loss ended their strong run just as the season enters its decisive final phase.

The Inter vs Atalanta match also comes with fresh concerns for Inter, who could be without key attacking duo Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram. Martinez is dealing with an injury while Thuram has been sidelined by illness, and midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is also a doubt with a muscle problem.

Inter’s week was further complicated after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Norway’s Bodo/Glimt, losing 5-2 on aggregate in the playoff round.

Coach Cristian Chivu, however, insists the title race is far from decided.

“With 30 points still available, nothing would have changed even if we had won,” Chivu said after the derby defeat. “We must unlock our full potential and remain competitive until the very end.”

For Atalanta, the Inter vs Atalanta showdown also provides a chance to recover from a tough European outing. The Bergamo side suffered a heavy 6-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 earlier this week.

With both teams seeking a response after difficult results, the Inter vs Atalanta encounter could prove significant in shaping the closing stages of the Serie A campaign.
