Iran confirms nuclear talks with US will proceed within national interests

Make nuclear deal or next attack will be ‘far worse’, Trump warns Iran

WEB DESK: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Tuesday that he has directed his foreign minister to engage in nuclear negotiations with the United States, emphasising that the discussions will be conducted in line with Iran’s national interests. The decision follows comments from US President Donald Trump, who warned of “bad things” if a deal could not be reached.

Pezeshkian stated that the negotiations would take place under conditions free from threats and unrealistic demands, noting that the move comes in response to appeals from friendly governments in the region. “I have instructed my Minister of Foreign Affairs to pursue fair and equitable negotiations, provided a suitable environment exists,” he said in a statement on X.

Focus on Nuclear Issue Only

Iran has stressed that talks will strictly focus on the nuclear programme, rejecting any discussions related to its missile capabilities or national defence. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told CNN that a new nuclear deal is achievable if the US team approaches negotiations in good faith. “If the US follows the guidance of President Trump and aims for a fair and equitable deal to prevent nuclear weapons, I am confident a deal can be reached,” he said.

Tensions and Security Concerns

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Washington deploying an aircraft carrier group following recent anti-government protests in Iran. Tehran has repeatedly insisted that while it seeks diplomatic solutions, it will respond decisively to any acts of aggression.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also cautioned that any US military action could trigger a “regional war,” underscoring the high stakes surrounding the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The development signals a cautious but significant step toward dialogue between Washington and Tehran, with both sides under pressure from domestic and international actors to reach a workable agreement.
