WEB DESK: Iran has formally broadened the scope of its retaliatory campaign, signalling that American economic interests and strategic assets are now legitimate targets amid the intensifying regional conflict.
Reports carried by the Iranian outlet Fars News Agency and other regional media on 8 March 2026 cite an unnamed Iranian military official confirming that Tehran has expanded its list of targets beyond purely military installations. The revised strategy now includes what officials describe as “American capital and interests” as well as wider economic infrastructure linked to the United States and its allies across the Middle East.
The shift follows the launch of Operation Epic Fury on 28 February 2026, a joint military campaign conducted by the United States Armed Forces and the Israel Defense Forces that has reportedly inflicted substantial damage on Iranian military and industrial facilities.
Iranian media reports indicate that the new targeting framework includes economic and strategic infrastructure connected to the United States and Israel throughout the Gulf region. Recent incidents cited by regional outlets include strikes affecting desalination facilities in Bahrain, oil infrastructure near Haifa in Israel, and energy-related hubs in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
Civilian damage claims intensify international scrutiny
Alongside the widening target list, Iranian authorities and humanitarian organisations have highlighted extensive damage to civilian infrastructure inside the country.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society reports that approximately 10,000 civilian structures have been damaged since the escalation began, including dozens of healthcare facilities and more than 20 schools. International monitoring groups are examining several specific incidents linked to the ongoing campaign.
Investigations by Human Rights Watch and other humanitarian agencies are focusing on a strike on 2 March targeting a school and medical clinic located within a compound associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Tehran. Another incident under review involves an elementary school complex in Minab, where local reports indicate significant civilian casualties.
Tehran has framed its expanded targeting strategy as a “lawful and proportionate” response to what it describes as indiscriminate attacks on Iranian cities. However, officials in Washington and Tel Aviv insist their operations are focused on military infrastructure, including missile production facilities and command centres linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The growing gap between these competing narratives has further complicated international efforts to de-escalate the conflict, as the widening scope of targets increasingly risks drawing additional states and critical economic infrastructure into the confrontation.
