WEB DESK: Tehran has drawn up its formal conditions for any potential end to the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, but is keeping the specifics under wraps until it deems the timing right, Iranian officials have indicated.
Speaking on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed that Iran had reached a clear internal position on recent peace overtures.
However, he stressed that Tehran would not reveal its red lines publicly under external pressure or artificial deadlines, according to Al Jazeera.
The remarks come as diplomatic tensions escalate in the Middle East, with the region on edge ahead of a US-imposed deadline related to the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran rejects Tuesday ultimatum
Iran has flatly dismissed a Tuesday deadline set by President Donald Trump concerning the free passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the ultimatum as “unrealistic and provocative”.
Baghaei reiterated Tehran’s sovereign rights over its territorial waters and insisted that any resolution must address core Iranian demands, including the lifting of what it calls “oppressive” sanctions and firm guarantees for national security.
Analysts say Tehran’s strategy of withholding its detailed proposals is a calculated move to preserve negotiating leverage in a dangerous game of brinkmanship.
The humanitarian and economic costs of the conflict continue to rise across the region, even as indirect channels including via Pakistan have reportedly carried messages between the sides.
Washington has pushed for the Strait of Hormuz to be fully reopened to international shipping, with President Trump issuing repeated threats of further strikes on Iranian infrastructure if the waterway is not cleared. Iran, for its part, has warned of retaliatory action while maintaining that the strait remains open to all except its adversaries.
No immediate breakthrough is expected, with both sides appearing determined not to show weakness as the Tuesday deadline approaches.
