Iran halts gas exports to Turkey after Israeli strike on South Pars field

ISTANBUL/TEHRAN: Iran has stopped natural gas exports to Turkey following an Israeli strike on the South Pars gas field last week, sources familiar with the matter said.

Turkey obtained about 14 per cent of its natural gas from Iran in 2025, according to data from the Turkish Natural Gas Distributors Association.

The disruption comes amid heightened tensions in the region and raises concerns about energy security for Ankara, Bloomberg said in a report.

The South Pars field, located in southern Iran, is the world’s largest gas field and is shared with Qatar. Damage to infrastructure from the strike forced Iran to suspend deliveries, and officials have not indicated when supplies might resume.

Analysts said Turkey may need to increase imports from Russia and Azerbaijan to meet its energy needs, potentially affecting regional gas markets.

The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure in conflict zones and comes as Israel intensifies strikes against Iranian-linked targets in the Middle East.
