DUBAI: Iran is preparing to connect its national electricity grid with Qatar’s in the near future as part of broader efforts to expand regional energy cooperation, according to Iran’s Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi.

As reported by Tasnim news agency, Aliabadi on Tuesday said feasibility studies for the Iran–Qatar interconnection are in their final stages, with the project now moving into the early implementation phase. He added that Tehran is also conducting studies to establish potential electricity grid linkages with other Gulf countries, signalling a wider push to integrate Iran into regional power networks.

The planned interconnection with Qatar is seen as part of Iran’s strategy to enhance energy exchange capacity, improve grid stability, and strengthen cross-border infrastructure cooperation in the region.

Officials have not yet provided a timeline for completion, but described the project as progressing steadily as technical assessments conclude and implementation planning begins.

Further details regarding capacity, transmission routes, and participating partners in other Gulf states are expected to be announced as negotiations and technical preparations advance.
