Iran-UAE Tensions Escalate as Tehran Warns of Fallout, UAE Intercepts Drones and Missiles

WEB DESK: Iran has issued a chilling warning of “severe consequences” to the United Arab Emirates, following reports that Emirati air defences intercepted a barrage of drones and missiles launched from Iranian territory early on May 8.

A dangerous escalation

The United Arab Emirates confirmed its air defence systems were “actively engaging” hostile aerial threats in the early hours of Friday morning, with residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi reporting the sounds of interceptions.

The Ministry of Defence stated that the targets originated from Iran, marking a significant escalation in a week already marred by skirmishes.

The attacks follow a series of incidents in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where the U.S. military recently intercepted Iranian strikes aimed at American destroyers. While casualties in the UAE remain unconfirmed, the psychological truce that has held for a month is now under immense strain.

Tehran’s ‘puppet’ rhetoric

Iranian state media has responded to the interceptions with fierce rhetoric, labelling the UAE an “Israeli puppet state” and accusing it of complicity in Western-led maritime blockades.

A report by the Tasnim News Agency, which is closely aligned with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), warned that if Abu Dhabi’s involvement in “hostile acts” against Iran is confirmed, it will face a “heavy cost.”

This verbal onslaught suggests that Tehran is increasingly viewing its neighbours as legitimate targets in its broader confrontation with the U.S. and Israel.

With President Donald Trump describing the current ceasefire as still being in a “love tap” phase, the reality on the ground suggests a much more volatile transition toward renewed regional conflict.
