Iran unrest “under control,” Araghchi insists, citing foreign interference

Araghchi

WEB DESK: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has asserted that the current unrest in the country remains fully under government control, despite a surge in violent incidents over the past week.

Speaking to reporters, Araghchi acknowledged that demonstrations intensified toward the end of last week, but he emphasized that security forces are managing the situation. He attributed the recent escalation, in part, to threats of foreign intervention, specifically pointing to US President Donald Trump’s warnings regarding Iran.

Araghchi also accused “terrorist elements” of deliberately targetting both protesters and security personnel to create a pretext for potential external involvement. He maintained that the Iranian government is committed to maintaining order while addressing the underlying causes of unrest.

The minister’s remarks come amid widespread demonstrations across the country, which began in response to economic grievances but have grown into broader anti-government protests. Iranian authorities have reported disruptions and clashes, although independent verification remains limited due to restricted access and communications blackouts.

Unrest claims 500 lives: HRANA

Unrest in Iran has claimed over 500 lives, with nearly 10,600 arrests reported in protests spanning all 31 provinces, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The demonstrations, the largest since 2022, began on December 28 over rising prices and economic hardship but quickly evolved into nationwide anti-government protests demanding political reform and an end to clerical rule.

Amid an ongoing internet blackout, independent verification of casualties has been limited. US President Donald Trump has signalled support for protesters and is reportedly considering options including sanctions, cyber measures, and possible military action if the regime continues using lethal force. In response, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned of retaliation against US and Israeli targets. State media has blamed foreign powers for inciting violence, while footage continues to show large protests and clashes in major cities, highlighting the country’s deepening political crisis.
