Iran-US talks inch forward after Pakistani mediation, but not enough yet: Iranian official
Iran and the United States have made limited progress in narrowing differences during ongoing efforts to stabilise a fragile ceasefire, though major disagreements remain unresolved, according to a senior Iranian official speaking on Thursday.
The official said that while some areas of understanding had improved, key disputes persist, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader security concerns, leaving the future of negotiations uncertain. The comments come more than halfway through a two-week truce aimed at preventing further escalation after weeks of heightened tensions and conflict-related disruption.
A notable diplomatic development during this period was a visit to Tehran by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who met senior Iranian officials on Wednesday. According to the Iranian source, the visit helped reduce differences on certain points and injected cautious optimism into efforts to sustain the ceasefire and resume structured dialogue between Tehran and Washington.
Pakistan has played a behind-the-scenes mediating role throughout the crisis, maintaining communication channels with both sides. Its involvement has included hosting earlier rounds of indirect discussions and facilitating message exchanges aimed at keeping talks alive despite deep mistrust between the two adversaries.
Analysts say Islamabad’s position as a trusted interlocutor has allowed it to contribute to de-escalation efforts, even as core issues between Iran and the United States remain far from resolved.
