WASHINGTON: Iran will allow no more than about 15 vessels a day to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as part of the Pakistan mediated 14-day US-Iran ceasefire arrangement it reached with the United States, according to sources.
The Strait, a 21-mile narrow waterway between Iran and Oman linking the Gulf to the Indian Ocean and carries nearly a fifth of global oil shipments, had been effectively shut since the conflict began in late February, disrupting global energy supplies and pushing up oil prices.
Under the truce, Iran’s transit is expected to be tightly controlled and coordinated with its armed forces, with movements far below pre‑war levels and subject to specific permissions and procedures that could limit how many ships can safely navigate the waterway each day.
Shipping data and industry sources show that traffic through Hormuz remains significantly reduced despite the ceasefire, with only a handful of vessels actually moving through the strait since the pause in hostilities, underscoring continuing uncertainty about how the deal will be implemented.
