Is there any likelihood for Lahore to receive snowfall this season?

Lahore snow

WEB DESK: Provincial authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation across Punjab, with officials warning that the current winter season is likely to be longer and colder than usual, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said there was no possibility of snowfall in Lahore, clarifying rumours circulating on social media. However, he noted that temperatures this winter have dropped compared to last year.

Kathia said Punjab has received significantly less rainfall than average this season. While the province typically records around 11.2 millimetres of rain in December, only 2.5 millimetres were recorded this year, a reduction of nearly 75 per cent.

Dense fog remains major concern

The PDMA chief said severe fog continues to pose a major challenge across Punjab, adding that conditions are unlikely to improve unless the province receives rainfall. Reduced precipitation has worsened visibility on highways and motorways, disrupting travel and daily life.

Rain and snowfall expected in northern areas

According to the PDMA, rain and snowfall are expected in Murree and the Galiyat region after January 17 or 18. However, the official cautioned that the intensity of cold weather is likely to increase further after these dates.

Winter season may extend into spring

Kathia said last year’s winter lasted longer than usual, and a similar pattern is expected this year due to delayed onset of severe cold. He warned that cold conditions could persist into March or even early April.

Describing the trend as part of a changing climatic pattern, the PDMA chief said authorities were preparing for extended cold spells and urged the public to take precautionary measures as temperatures continue to fall.
