Islamabad: crime rate surges during ex-IG’s tenure

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad witnessed a significant surge in crime during Dr Akbar Nasir Khan’s tenure as Inspector General (IG), with over 12,000 thefts and robberies, police data shows.
The federal capital recorded 12,786 incidents, including vehicle thefts surpassing Rs3 billion and motorcycle thefts amounting to nearly Rs1 billion from May 21, 2022, to March 29, 2024.

The period also saw 235 homicides and the snatching of over 5,000 mobile phones.
In addition, 812 kidnapping cases were filed, with more than a hundred involving sexual assault on women.
Despite the alarming figures, authorities managed to recover 375 of the 2,073 stolen vehicles.
The crackdown on crime remains a top priority for law enforcement agencies, police said.
