WEB DESK: Islamabad has, for the first time in its history, developed a dedicated “Safe Muharram” mobile application aimed at strengthening security arrangements during Muharram ul Haram, officials said on Wednesday.

A high-level review meeting on Muharram security arrangements was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, where a range of digital surveillance and field security measures were approved to ensure peaceful observance of religious gatherings.

Digital monitoring and Safe City integration

The meeting was informed that all imambargahs, majalis venues and procession routes across Islamabad have been geo-tagged as part of a comprehensive mapping exercise.

Authorities also decided to introduce drone-based digital surveillance to monitor processions and gatherings in real time.

Officials said the newly developed application will allow citizens to report suspicious activity or poor security arrangements instantly, while also enabling live location sharing and image uploads.

A central control room has been established at the Safe City Islamabad system to monitor all activities during Muharram.

Four-tier security plan and field directives

A four-layer security cordon will be implemented around majalis and procession routes, with strict checking at entry and exit points.

The interior minister directed authorities to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow through effective implementation of a traffic management plan.

He further instructed that police and administrative officers remain present in the field for continuous monitoring, while proper food and logistical arrangements be ensured for deployed personnel.

Coordination with religious scholars and organisers has also been emphasised to ensure adherence to the agreed code of conduct.

Chief Commissioner and the Inspector General of Police Islamabad briefed the interior minister on the overall security preparedness and operational arrangements for the upcoming Muharram period.
