Islamabad: “minor’s” speeding car kills two women on scooter

WEB DESK: Two women riding a scooter were killed in a tragic traffic accident near the Constitution Avenue Secretariat Chowk in Islamabad on Monday. According to police reports, a speeding V8 vehicle, allegedly driven by an underage driver, collided with the scooter.

The impact of the crash resulted in the immediate deaths of both women. Authorities have registered a case at the Secretariat Police Station and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. As per the FIR filed by the brother of the deceased, Adnan Tajamul, his sister Samreen Hussain aged between 26 and 27 years was returning from PNCA on her scooter alongside her friend Tabinda Batool (26/27years old) when a when a white vehicle struck their scooter due to the driver’s ‘negligence, recklessness, and overspeeding’.

The suspect, Abu Zar son of Muhammad Asif, has been granted a seven-day physical remand. According to the remand papers, the suspect was not in possession of an identity card or a driving license at the time, though he claimed in his statement that he possesses a valid ID. The charge sheet states that the accused, while driving recklessly, negligently, and at high speed, struck the scooter carrying the two young women. The suspect admitted to making a Snapchat video moments before the incident and stated he discarded his mobile phone immediately afterwards. Police have been directed to recover the phone to examine any video evidence, obtain his ID card and CCTV footage from the accident site to verify his age, conduct a medical age determination test, and determine whether he was alone or accompanied by someone else in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

In an official statement, the police emphasised that legal proceedings will be pursued in strict accordance with the law. “A case has been registered, and action will be taken as per the law,” a police spokesperson stated.

The collision caused both women to fall and sustain severe injuries. They were immediately shifted to PIMS Hospital via 1122 ambulance, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact speed of the vehicle and the complete sequence of events leading to the fatal collision.
