Islamabad police say two suspected robbers injured in firing by accomplices

ISLAMABAD: Two suspected members of robbery gang were injured during an exchange of fire when their accomplices opened fire on police teams, Islamabad police said.

According to an Islamabad police spokesperson, teams from Sabzi Mandi and Noon police stations were taking under-custody suspects to identify and arrest their accomplices when the incident occurred.

Police said that armed accomplices hiding nearby opened “indiscriminate fire” on the police parties in an attempt to free the detained suspects.

The police teams remained unharmed due to bulletproof jackets and other security measures, the spokesperson said.

However, the detained suspects were injured as a result of firing by their own associates, police said.

Among the injured suspects is a man identified as Suleman, who is an Afghan national, according to police.

The injured were shifted to hospital for medical treatment.

Police said the suspects were wanted in cases of robbery, street crime and other serious offences.

A search operation has been launched to arrest the fleeing accomplices involved in the attack, police added.
