Islamabad Talks: Iran says can’t trust US, signals tough stance on any deal

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf  said that Iran made it clear its position that it does not trust the United States and is taking a firm position in negotiations.

Iranian officials said Washington needs a deal more than Tehran, warning that if their conditions are not accepted, Iran will move forward on its own path.

They stressed that Iran’s policies are focused on protecting its national interests and sovereignty.

Tehran also signalled a tougher stance on the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that it holds control over the strategic waterway and may impose conditions, including tolls, on ships passing through it.

The talks ended without a breakthrough, highlighting deep divisions between the two sides over key issues, including security and control of the region.

Speaking after the talks, Ghalibaf said Iran’s delegation had put forward “forward-looking initiatives” aimed at resolving key points of contention.

However, he noted that the opposing side ultimately failed to build sufficient trust with Iranian negotiators, leading to a stalemate in the discussions.
