ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to construct a world-class, Dubai-style cricket stadium in Islamabad, in a bid to ease chronic traffic congestion during major matches.
Traffic in Islamabad and Rawalpindi often grinds to a halt during games at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, prompting authorities to push for a new venue that would help manage crowd movement and reduce pressure on the twin cities’ road networks.
Sources said that the Ministry of Interior has selected a land in Sector D-12 for the project, where a Dubai-style stadium will be constructed.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has instructed the Capital Development Authority to complete the project within one year. Being located away from the city centre, the new stadium is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure in Islamabad during matches.
Sources said that a seven star hotel will also be built near the stadium to provide high-standard accommodation for international teams, officials, and guests. Modern parking, security and transport facilities will also be part of the project.
The stadium will have features similar to the Dubai Sports Complex, making Islamabad not only a centre for cricket but also an ideal venue for hosting international events.
