Islamabad to introduce new M-Tag chip for motorcycles

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon said on Wednesday that they were working on a new chip for motorcycle M-Tags which will be provided to citizens free of cost once completed.

Speaking to journalists outside Parliament House Islamabad, Memon said the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) is developing the new chip to improve the current tagging system.

He said that the existing M-Tag becomes unusable once removed from a motorcycle, preventing it from being reused on another vehicle.

However, if an M-Tag is stolen, citizens can report it through the official helpline, after which it will be blocked immediately and replaced free of charge, he added.

Memon said that the M-Tag system includes several security and safety features.

He also said that security has been tightened at mosques and imambargahs across the capital, with officials deployed in the field to monitor the situation.

The deputy commissioner said that the registration of online taxis is also under way, with more than 19,000 taxis and motorcycles registered so far.

He said that drivers have been directed to upload details of passengers, including pick-up and drop-off locations and identification data.

“In many countries taxis cannot operate without licences,” he said, adding that the registration of taxis in Islamabad is also being carried out under a security mechanism.
