RAWALPINDI: In a pulsating encounter at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Islamabad United clinched a dramatic victory over Multan Sultans to secure their spot in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) playoffs.
The match, which marked the 27th fixture of PSL season 9, showcased scintillating cricketing action as Islamabad United chased down Multan’s target of 229 runs on the final ball of the innings.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Islamabad United’s skipper, Shadab Khan, sent Multan Sultans to bat. The opening pair of Yasir Khan and Mohammad Rizwan provided a solid start for Multan, but it was Usman Khan who stole the show with a blistering century. Usman’s remarkable knock of 100 runs off just 50 balls propelled Multan Sultans to a formidable total of 228/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite some resistance from Faheem Ashraf and Hasnain Shah, Multan’s batting dominance remained unchallenged.
Facing a daunting target, Islamabad United embarked on their chase with confidence. Colin Munro led the charge with a sublime innings of 84 runs, ably supported by captain Shadab Khan’s 54 and Imad Wasim’s unbeaten 30. The Islamabad United batsmen displayed aggression and composure as they steadily chased down the target, ultimately securing victory on the final delivery of the match. Faheem Ashraf’s all-round performance, coupled with contributions from Haider Ali and Imad Wasim, proved crucial in Islamabad’s successful run chase.
With this thrilling win, Islamabad United booked their place in the PSL playoffs, joining Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi in the quest for championship glory. In the points table, Multan Sultans sit atop the standings with 12 points, closely followed by Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United, both tied at 11 points. Quetta Gladiators occupy the fourth position with 9 points, while Karachi Kings round off the top five with 8 points.
