Islamic nations unite in condemnation of Al-Aqsa closure

WEB DESK: The international community is facing a significant diplomatic flashpoint following a joint declaration by eight major Islamic nations condemning the total closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to Doha News, in a rare show of unified frustration, the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar issued a stinging rebuke of the Israeli government’s latest security measures.

The group characterised the restriction of access to the site in Islam as an illegal provocation that threatens to further destabilise an already volatile region.

A violation of international law and status quo

The joint statement, issued with uncharacteristic bluntness, asserts that the closure constitutes a “flagrant violation of international law” and the long-standing historical status quo of Jerusalem’s holy sites. The ministers argued that as an occupying power, Israel lacks the legal sovereignty to dictate worship conditions within East Jerusalem.

Central to their argument is the role of the Jordanian-run Jerusalem Waqf, which the eight nations insist remains the sole authority with the legal mandate to manage the 144-dunam compound. By bypassing this authority and barring worshippers during the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar, the coalition claims the Israeli authorities have overstepped their jurisdiction and breached international humanitarian conventions.

Fears of regional escalation and religious tension

The timing of the closure has sparked deep-seated fears regarding its potential to ignite wider unrest. While Israeli officials have cited heightened security concerns and the risk of conflict as the primary drivers behind the lockdown, the coalition of Muslim nations views the move as an unnecessary escalation that targets religious freedom.

The ministers warned that such “provocative” actions serve only to inflame sentiment across the Muslim world and could derail ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain regional peace. As the international community watches closely, the eight nations have called for immediate global intervention to ensure the gates are reopened, insisting that the sanctity of religious practice must be upheld even amidst geopolitical strife.
