Israeli media outlets are reporting that Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, Iranian authorities have yet to officially confirm the claim.
According to the reports, Iran’s 88-member Assembly of Experts – the clerical body constitutionally responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader – approved Mojtaba Khamenei’s selection. Israeli outlets previously stated that the council had been conducting its deliberations and voting process online, with the decision believed to be in its final stages.
There has been no immediate statement from Tehran confirming the outcome. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier described the situation as “extraordinary” but noted that state institutions continue to function and that the country is not paralysed.
Under Iran’s constitution, the authority to appoint the Supreme Leader rests solely with the Assembly of Experts. Until official confirmation is issued by Iranian authorities, the reports remain unverified.
