ROME: Italian officials have firmly dismissed a suggestion that Italy could take Iran’s place at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, calling the proposal inappropriate and unrealistic.
The idea was floated by Paolo Zampolli, who said he had raised it with Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino. Iran’s participation has faced uncertainty following recent regional tensions and security concerns.
However, Italy’s Sports Minister Andrea Abodi made it clear that qualification cannot be granted outside the field of play. He stressed that Italy’s return to the World Cup is “not possible and not appropriate,” adding that teams must earn their place through competition.
The stance was echoed by Luciano Buonfiglio, who said any such move would be offensive, emphasizing that World Cup participation must be deserved.
Meanwhile, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described the proposal as “shameful,” reinforcing the government’s unified rejection.
Italy, a four-time champion, failed to qualify for the tournament after losing a playoff to Bosnia and Herzegovina, extending its absence from the competition.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Iran currently placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.
