J. Cole to swap music for basketball after landing surprise pro deal in China?

J. Cole could be taking an unexpected turn away from music after landing a professional basketball deal in China, but the bigger question is whether he can actually compete at that level.

The Grammy-winning rapper has signed with the Nanjing Monkey Kings in the Chinese Basketball Association, according to reports, marking his most serious step yet into professional sport.

A personal goal put to the test

Cole, 41, framed the move as a personal challenge rather than a career switch.

“The basketball thing is like me just trying to scratch a last itch… let me see if I can do this,” he said in a recent interview.

He acknowledged he is not in peak condition and plans to “go out there and have fun with it” rather than chase numbers.

A bigger stage this time

This is not Cole’s first attempt at professional basketball, but it is his most demanding one.

He previously featured in the Basketball Africa League in 2021, where he averaged 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds across three games.

In Canada’s Elite Basketball League in 2022, he averaged 2.4 points over five appearances.

While those stints drew global attention, his on-court impact remained limited.

The Chinese Basketball Association is widely seen as a step up in competition, raising questions about how he will perform against more experienced players.

Cole’s presence is also expected to bring significant attention to the league, with his global fanbase likely to follow closely.

The move comes shortly after the release of his album The Fall-Off, as he continues to explore ambitions beyond music.

Whether this is a short-term experiment or something more serious remains unclear.

For now, the focus will be on whether one of hip-hop’s biggest names can translate passion into performance on a professional court.
