Jack Pugh dies as Wisconsin football pays tribute to former tight end

Jack Pugh, a former Wisconsin Badgers tight end, has died in his early 20s, with the university confirming the news in a statement.

A cause of death has not yet been revealed.

The football programme said it was “deeply saddened” by his passing, remembering him as a “positive light” who was loved by teammates and staff.

Wisconsin football pays tribute

In a statement shared publicly, Wisconsin Athletics said Pugh brought “a genuine spirit” to the programme and cared deeply about others.

He was part of the Badgers’ 2021 recruiting class, having joined as a highly rated four-star prospect.

Spoke openly about his struggles

Pugh stepped away from football in 2023, citing health reasons.

At the time, he shared that he had struggled with “prolonged depression” and substance abuse, adding that he wanted to build a life he felt “happy and proud of”.

His message highlighted a shift towards prioritising his mental health after years of difficulty.

Pugh later earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2025.

The programme said he would be “forever remembered and loved”, as tributes continue to emerge following news of his death.
