President Donald Trump publicly endorsed boxer and podcast host Jake Paul for future political office during a rally in Kentucky, despite the influencer not currently running for any position.
Speaking at an event in Hebron, Kentucky, Trump told supporters he believed Paul could soon enter politics and pledged to back him if he decided to run.
“I’m going to make a prediction that you will be, in the not-too-distant future, running for political office,” Trump said. “You have my complete and total endorsement.”
Trump then invited Paul onstage, drawing loud cheers from the crowd as the boxer joined him at the rally.
Paul used the moment to praise the president, saying Trump had influenced the way he approaches conflict and criticism.
“What Mr Trump has taught me is courage,” Paul told the crowd. “We never back down from a fight, even if they’re much bigger than you, much, much bigger than you.”
The boxer, who grew up in neighbouring Ohio, told attendees the rally was being held only a few hours from where he was raised. He also tried to connect with local voters, saying communities like those in Kentucky share the same fighting spirit.
“I feel all the local Kentuckians feel the same way,” Paul said. “You guys have that fight. You guys have that swag.”
Paul also pointed to the logistics facility hosting the rally as an example of the kind of American industry he believes should be thriving.
“My dad taught me to fight and all of our voices matter in America,” he said. “I’m never afraid to speak the truth.”
Trump introduced Paul by referencing the boxer’s podcast, revealing that Paul had previously invited him to appear on the show.
“His podcast is big stuff and he’s big stuff,” Trump said. “This guy has guts.”
The moment comes as social media personalities such as Paul continue to build massive online audiences, increasingly blurring the lines between entertainment influence and political messaging.
