Jane Fonda says she had “more to say” than Barbra Streisand in Redford Oscars tribute

Jane Fonda playfully questioned why Barbra Streisand was chosen to honour Robert Redford during the Oscars 2026 In Memoriam segment, joking that she had more of a claim to the tribute.

Speaking at an Oscars afterparty, Fonda said she was surprised Streisand took the stage to honour the late actor and filmmaker.

“I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford?” she said.

Fonda added with a laugh that Streisand “only made one movie with him” while she had starred in four.

“I made four. I have more to say,” she joked.

A tribute to Robert Redford

Streisand appeared during the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment to honour Redford, who died in September 2025 at the age of 89.

The pair starred together in The Way We Were, and Streisand delivered a tribute before performing the film’s iconic theme song.

“He was a brilliant, subtle actor,” she said on stage, reflecting on their time working together.

Fonda, who shared the screen with Redford in multiple films including Barefoot in the Park and Our Souls at Night, also spoke warmly about her longtime friend.

“I was always in love with him,” she said. “The most gorgeous human being.”

A long shared history

Fonda and Redford worked together across several decades, forming one of Hollywood’s most recognisable on-screen pairings.

Following his death, Fonda said she was deeply affected, describing him as “a beautiful person in every way” and praising his impact on cinema.

The Oscars 2026 In Memoriam segment honoured several major figures from the industry, with Redford among the most notable names remembered during the ceremony.
