Jarvis Butts, the man convicted in the killing of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, has been found dead in prison just weeks after his sentencing, in a development that leaves critical questions in the case unresolved.
The 43-year-old was discovered unresponsive on Thursday morning at a correctional facility in Jackson, Michigan, according to officials. His death is being treated as an apparent suicide, with an investigation now underway.
Authorities said prison staff attempted life-saving measures but were unable to revive him. State police have been called in to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Butts had been sentenced on March 12 to between 35 and 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, as well as multiple sexual offences involving young girls.
The case had drawn widespread attention not only for the severity of the crimes but also for the unanswered questions surrounding Na’Ziyah’s disappearance.
The teenager was reported missing in January 2024 after she failed to return home from school. Her body has never been recovered.
Prosecutors said Butts sexually assaulted Na’Ziyah and later killed her. As part of a plea agreement, he had provided a statement about what happened to her body, though those details were not made public.
During sentencing earlier this month, emotional victim impact statements were delivered by family members, who spoke about the lasting trauma and loss.
“You are a serial habitual predator,” Na’Ziyah’s aunt said in court, describing the devastation caused by the crime.
Butts had also pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual offences involving other children aged between four and 13, further intensifying the gravity of the case.
His death now raises fresh uncertainty around whether the full truth of what happened will ever be known.
For those close to the case, it marks a deeply complicated end to a process that had already left many questions unanswered, particularly about the fate of Na’Ziyah, whose remains have never been found.
Authorities said the investigation into Butts’ death remains ongoing.
