ISLAMABAD: In a landmark tournament for Pakistani tennis, Britain’s Jay Clarke lifted the 2025 Islamabad Challenger (ATP Challenger Cup) singles title, the first edition of the event recently hosted here.
Held at the PTF Tennis Complex, the tournament saw Clarke defeat Turkey’s Mert Alkaya 6–3, 6–1 in a dominant final.
This event is part of the ATP Challenger Tour, which is the second-highest tier of professional men’s tennis, just below the main ATP Tour.
ATP Challenger Cup features a knockout format wherein players must win every match to progress through the rounds, starting from the opening draw and heading toward the final. Matches are typically best-of-three sets.
What the win means
Clarke’s win not only marks him as the first-ever singles champion of this tournament but also highlights the growing significance of hosting ATP Challenger events in Pakistan. As a Challenger-level event, the singles draw included seeded players, wildcards, and qualifiers, giving opportunities to diverse international and local talent.
How the tournament works
For a player to claim the title, they must navigate multiple rounds such as first round, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final and winning every tie.
It’s a test of consistency, skill, and mental strength. The champion earns ranking points under the ATP system, which can help improve their global ranking and pave the way for entry into higher-level ATP tournaments.
Clarke’s decisive final (6–3, 6–1) after several tough matches earlier in the week confirms his dominance on the hard courts of Islamabad.
His victory serves as a landmark moment, especially given that this was the first time Pakistan hosted an ATP Challenger Cup
