The former husband of Jill Biden has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his current wife, authorities in Delaware confirmed on Tuesday.
William Stevenson, 77, was indicted on a murder charge following the death of his wife, 64-year-old Linda Stevenson, who was found unresponsive in December inside a home in New Castle County, police said.
Stevenson was arrested and arraigned and is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution on a $500,000 bond. It is not yet clear whether he has legal representation.
Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975. A spokesperson for the Biden post-presidential office declined to comment on the arrest and charges.
What authorities have said so far
Police said officers were initially called to the home after receiving a report of a domestic dispute. Linda Stevenson was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead.
Investigators have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding her death, including the cause or manner, citing the ongoing investigation.
Officials have also not commented on what evidence led to the indictment.
Remembering Linda Stevenson
Linda Stevenson was described in her obituary as deeply family-oriented, with a love for travelling with her daughter and granddaughter and cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles.
In recent years, she founded a bookkeeping business and became close with many of her clients.
“Linda will be remembered as tenacious, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal,” the obituary said. “Her strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten.”
The case remains active, and authorities have indicated that further updates may follow as the legal process continues.
