Jonathan the tortoise ‘dies’ at 194 in crypto scam and the internet actually believed it

Jonathan the tortoise

Jonathan the tortoise has survived nearly two centuries of history. This week, he also survived being declared dead online.

The 194-year-old, believed to be the world’s oldest living land animal, became the centre of a viral hoax after a fake social media post claimed he had died. The story spread widely before being debunked.

At the time the internet was reacting, Jonathan was very much alive.

How the story spiralled

The false claim originated from an account posing as Jonathan’s long-time vet, sharing an emotional message about his supposed death. The tone was convincing, complete with personal details and reflections, which helped it gain traction quickly across social media.

As it spread, some outlets and users treated the claim as real before verification caught up.

The crypto scam behind it

What made the situation more unusual was what followed.

The same account that announced Jonathan’s “death” was also asking for cryptocurrency donations, turning the hoax into a scam designed to exploit the attention.

Officials later confirmed that the real vet was not behind the account and that the claims had no basis in fact.

What was actually happening

On the island of Saint Helena, where Jonathan has lived since the 1800s, officials were prompted to check on him after the rumour gained momentum.

They found him exactly where expected, alive, resting and unaware of the global confusion.

Despite his age, Jonathan continues his routine of grazing, resting and occasionally enjoying fruit, a quiet life that has remained largely unchanged for decades.

A very modern problem

The incident quickly became an example of how easily misinformation can spread, especially when it appears credible at first glance.

A believable voice, a widely recognised figure and a simple narrative were enough to convince large numbers of people.

For Jonathan, nothing changed.

For the internet, it was another reminder of how quickly things can spiral when verification comes second.
