KARACHI: K-Electric, the sole power distributor in Pakistan’s largest city, has raised electricity tariffs by up to Rs3.28 per unit after getting approval from the country’s power regulator, the company said on Thursday.

The new rates will be effective from October 2023 to March 2024 and will reflect the fuel price adjustment for five months, a spokesperson for K-Electric said.

The spokesperson said the additional charges will be collected from consumers in the billing months of October and November 2023.

K-Electric supplies electricity to more than 2.8 million customers in Karachi, a sprawling metropolis of about 25 million people that often faces power outages and load-shedding.

Earlier, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), an independent body that regulates the power sector in Pakistan and determines electricity tariffs for generation, transmission and distribution companies, allowed K-Electric to raise electricity tariff under the head of the fuel price adjustment.
