WEB DESK: Firefighting teams are still battling to fully extinguish a major fire that engulfed a garments factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone.
The blaze caused a partial collapse of the factory structure, and flames continue to erupt from within the debris. Fire Officer Mahboob-ur-Rehman reported that five fire engines and one snorkel are actively working at the site. The operation currently focuses on dousing flames from multiple points within the rubble and conducting cooling procedures to prevent flare-ups.
Officer Mahboob-ur-Rehman explained that a large quantity of fabric trapped inside the debris is fueling the persistent flames. Due to this challenge, he estimated that fully extinguishing the fire and completing the cooling process could take an additional one to two days.
Earlier on Thursday, rescue officials had reported at least eleven fire tenders were battling the blaze, which has spread to an adjacent building. Concerns were high about the risk to two neighbouring facilities, a chemical warehouse and a second-hand goods unit, raising fears of further escalation.
Rescue 1122 had deployed crews immediately, and thick smoke billowed from the site as teams worked to contain the flames. While all workers were safely evacuated, firefighting operations are still ongoing, with control yet to be fully established.
