Karachi imposes extended ban on rickshaws across major roads

Karachi rickshaw ban

WEB DESK: The city administration has expanded its ban on the movement of 3-seater and 5-seater rickshaws, extending restrictions from 20 to 26 major thoroughfares, according to a notification issued today.

The decision, taken on the recommendation of the DIG Traffic, aims to improve traffic flow across the metropolis. Under Section 144, Commissioner Karachi has enforced the ban with immediate effect, prohibiting rickshaw entry from Sharah-e-Faisal to I.I. Chundrigar Road. The earlier restriction on 20 key roads will remain effective from October 18 to December 17.

SHOs have been directed to register cases against violators, while relevant departments and deputy commissioners have been ordered to ensure strict enforcement. The commissioner has also imposed a complete ban on 1+4 rickshaws on six additional major roads. The new restrictions will remain in force for the same duration as the earlier notification, with officials emphasising that the move is intended to enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and facilitate commuters.
