KARACHI: Under the new “Track and Trace System”, Karachi police have issued 48,211 e-challans over the past 14 days for various traffic violations, officials said.
Around 4,500 citizens have so far approached police authorities with a request for waivers.
According to data, the highest number of challans — 31,555 — were issued for not wearing seatbelts, followed by 8,431 for riding without helmets and 2,304 for overspeeding.
Between October 27 and November 9, a total of 2,009 challans were issued for signal violations, 1,263 for using mobile phones while driving, 670 for tinted windows, 585 for fancy number plates, 556 for wrong-way driving, and 368 for carrying passengers on rooftops.
Additionally, 250 challans were issued for no-parking violations, 233 for stop-line breaches, 132 for overloading, 65 for improper lane usage, and 58 for driving the wrong way on one-way streets.
A traffic police spokesperson clarified that no e-challan has yet been issued for non-payment of vehicle tax.
The spokesperson added that since the system’s launch, around 4,800 citizens have visited traffic facilitation centres after receiving their first e-challan. More than 90 per cent of these challans were waived, while the remaining were referred to a special committee for review and final decision.
Earlier, Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon said that fines for 50 types of traffic violations under the new traffic laws has been set at Rs5,000, with uniform implementation across the province.
